2010 census results are in and there was one incredibly interesting new trend in Puerto Rico. For the first time ever, the number of Puerto Ricans identifying themselves solely as black or American Indian jumped about 50 percent in the last decade. This is a marked shift from previous census results.
“It truly breaks with a historic pattern,” Jorge Duany, an anthropology professor at the University of Puerto Rico told the Associated Press.

From 2000 to 2010, more than twice as many Puerto Ricans left “La Isla del Encanto” than returned, according to the immigrant-focused Web site, Feet in 2 Worlds. In 2010, there were 3,725,789 people on the island, 82,821 fewer than in 2000. This decrease in population has been attributed to the island’s economic crisis.

Puerto Ricans should be the only ones who have a say in whether the island remains a part of the United States or becomes independent and the President and Congress should act on the results quickly, says a new report by the President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico released today.
The 114-page report is the product of two years work by the Task Force that included public meetings in the island nation. It lays out scores of recommendations on some of the island’s biggest challenges: economic development, healthcare and the future of Vieques.
