YouTube is making money moves! The video giant announced on Friday their partnership with International Superstar Maluma, Award-winning actor Gael Garcia Bernal, and comedian Sofia Nino de Rivera as part of their expansion of Spanish-language, original content.
“We’re thrilled to continue expanding our YouTube Originals portfolio with new Spanish language movies and series and to be working with amazing global Latin artists,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, YouTube.
“Latin America is a region filled with creative storytellers with unique voices, and we’re looking forward to working with them to bring their innovative brand of programming to YouTube fans around the world.”
Although YouTube did not specify what projects they’ll be working on with each individual, it’ll be exciting to find out how much influence they’ll have on the programming.
Bernal has worked as an actor, director, and producer, so it’s safe to say he may not only choose to star in films. This partnership can serve as a platform for him, for example, to help catapult Latin American talent both in front of and behind the camera.
For comedian de Rivera, she could follow in the footsteps of Eugenio Derbez who just last week announced his partnership with Amazon. Through that collaboration on a series titled, “LOL: Last One Laughing,” the world will be exposed to ten top comedians from Mexico. This also brings a potential for the participants to launch their careers on a global scale.
She could essentially also curate comedians for comedy specials to be watched via YouTube premium.
A similar path could be taken with Maluma, especially during a time when the world is hungry for Latin Music. YouTube is already working with Bad Bunny, who is part of the cast on the Adam Levine-produced original series “Sugar.”
Wouldn’t it be great if Maluma created a channel where he’d feature music videos much like MTV did back in the 80’s and 90’s? Of course, you can watch music videos all day, every day via YouTube already, but I do miss seeing stars like Daisy Fuentes and Downtown Julie Brown make watching videos fun and sexy.
The possibilities are endless, as are our speculations!
