The Queens-born streetwear titan is taking a well-deserved break after the recent opening of his Awake NY brick-and-mortar store. The brand’s aim has always been to capture the eclectic sensibility of the five boroughs, so it comes as no surprise that the recently-opened storefront is located in the heart of the Lower East Side, just outside the fashion hub of SoHo.

The Awake NY storefront’s interior — elegantly blending artwork, graffiti, checkered wall patterns and vintage boomboxes amid a curation of fresh threads — harkens back to the days of early 90s streetwear in New York with an elegant flourish that’s all Baque’s own. He takes great care to curate the vibe of the store, the hangers on the rails are straight, that the musky scent of Awake’s in-house Aguanilé incense is wafting through the space, and that the sound system is bumping something hot. According to Baque, it’s likely Björk these days, although he’s a known jazz-head: an image of the legendary Miles Davis playing his trump adorns two of the brand’s initial t-shirt designs.

“When customers come to visit the store, I want the space to evoke emotion,” says Baque. “I want you to just take it in and feel. Recently I was talking with a dad and daughter visiting the store — she was about 12 years-old — and I asked her [what she liked] about it. Her answer was [all of the different textures]. I was blown away; it’s not about the hype. It’s about what is real and tangible.”

The hype doesn’t hurt either, though — and there’s plenty. Baque made a name for himself in the world of streetwear, working for a decade as the Brand Director of Supreme. While still working at the globally-recognized streetwear brand, he started Awake, in 2012. He eventually left Supreme to establish his boutique creative agency, Baque Creative, and further develop Awake as a brand. You can now find his threads in retailers from Los Angeles to Japan, at high-end stores like Dover Street Market and Union LA. He also created Social Studies, a digitally-driven, multi-day experience in partnership with photographer Shaniqwa Jarvis and the Something Special Studios agency, which unites artists and brands via community-driven programming.

Awake is no stranger to collaborations, having partnered in the past with brands like Levi’s, Carhartt WIP, ASICS, and others in the streetwear space. The launch of the Awake NY storefront features new store-exclusive capsules by established streetwear giants Verdy and Jerry Lorenzo’s Fear of God.

One of Baque’s dreams is to create a space for young folks to loiter outside. He recounts the places nearby his store that he once used to spend time in front of — “Fat Beats, Bobbito’s Footwork, Union NY, Unique Boutique, Wendy’s and McDonald’s on Broadway, Shakespeare Underground, Mondo Kims, Alife” — and channels his biggest hope for the Awake NY space: fostering a community around it.

“Every job I’ve had I’ve made sure to have side projects that allowed me to stay inspired and hold on to my identity,” he says. “Awake was an outlet to get my ideas out. I wish I could take credit for the energy around the brand, the credit goes to the youth that believe in Awake and support it.”

Baque’s approach to community is as much about uplifting and giving back as it is about gathering folks together. Growing up in the South Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens, the child of two immigrant parents from Ecuador, he’s eager to bring attention to up-and-coming Latinx creatives.

Last September, UPS worked with Awake NY for a pop-up during New York Fashion Week titled “La Bodega Baque.” The effort featured exclusive products from the collaboration alongside a curation of up-and-coming Latinx brands chosen by Baque himself. The proceeds from the Awake NY x UPS collection went to Manhattan’s High School of Fashion Industries to support a scholarship program for Latinx designers and entrepreneurs, matching a $50,000 grant.

My mother taught me my work ethic. I swear, [she] could make magic happen with $50. My mother taught me to never accept the first offer: it’s always open for conversation and debate. Never take no for an answer.”

It wasn’t easy. After leaving Supreme in 2016, Baque had hit a plateau, running Awake NY without a space to ground the work. In 2020, he spoke to the late Virgil Abloh, who nudged him toward opening a space for Awake NY. Watching everything come to fruition as it has, Baque nods to his friend’s advice coming at a pivotal time. At the core of everything — the community that has rallied around Awake NY, the years of getting inside knowledge of the business, the work ethic his mother passed on to him — Baque ultimately points to his perseverance as the beating heart behind it all.

Present at several key points in the show, he was at last revealed to be Oscar Torres, the handsome friend of Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Tim (Julian Cihi), who was wrongfully accused of murder and recently released from prison. The Tie-Dye Guy became a hit online, partly for his boy-next-door good looks and for the chemistry he shares with Gomez’s character on-screen. Although only present for one season, Tie-Dye Guy made a splash, and the internet made waves back at Aaron Dominguez, the young actor under the multi-colored hoodie.

Dominguez has been riding that wave. Speaking to LATINA over Zoom, he’s humble and unassuming as he shares his early journey, but he grins broadly when he talks about his acting work. Born to Venezuelan parents, the emerging actor was always immersed in the performing arts: his father was a professional jazz and ballet dancer, and his mother was an actress and musician. They met in theater school and worked at now-defunct Radio Caracas TV, Venezuela’s most important independent television station before it was shut down by Hugo Chavez’s government in 2010. The family then moved to the United States, where Dominguez was born and raised.

Despite this artistic childhood, it took Dominguez a while to fully embrace the actor’s life. Though he began doing commercial acting work in Miami at a young age, the family eventually moved to the suburbs of Georgia, which Dominguez describes as a culture shock. Seeing his parents struggle to work in a new country made him contemplate a safer route, at one point almost going into sports journalism. After discovering that that path wasn’t for him, he shifted his focus back to local theater.

Easton Chirra

“I come from very humble beginnings,” he said. “Sometimes we were doing okay, sometimes we were doing very, very badly. That type of insecurity as a family was a bit traumatic growing up, and I didn’t know if I wanted to go through that [again]. The arts are the one thing where if you were lucky enough to catch a break it’s great, but there was beauty and terror in it: the beauty in the essence of being and doing what I love, but [the terror in] sacrificing a part of that stability in life. Growing up in that as a child, I thought ‘there’s no way.’”

As it goes, Dominguez was one of the lucky ones. Cast as a regular on Only Murders in the Building, the young creative could build off his past work in a more concentrated way. From minor roles to playing a regular and sharing screen time with Selena Gomez, Jane Lynch, and Steve Martin, Rodriguez described the experience as “life-altering.”

Despite catching his big break in a comedy-driven show, the young actor is not one to be tied to a genre. Near the end of last year, he branched out by appearing in The Inspection, a moving tale about Ellis French, played by Jeremy Pope of Pose, a gay Black soldier targeted because of his sexuality when he joins the Marines. Dominguez plays Castro, a soldier conflicted between submission to military culture and his own moral compass. Dominguez auditioned for the role while working on Only Murders in the Building after messaging director Elegance Bratton on Instagram to compliment him on the script. Castro’s supporting role, one of several that round out a layered ensemble, leaves room for the gray areas between ethics and social pressures. For a young actor like Dominguez, it was a meaty role that pushed his craft.

To be a Latino actor is to stay worried about being typecasted, even in 2023 as the arts and entertainment industries have faced a reckoning with representation. There is not one kind of Latino person and being Latino is not a race, and yet often Latino characters are written in such a way that they are exoticized and even villainized. “I am trying to fine tune the roles that I want to play,” he says. “Comedy is actually always something I steered away from because I find it so challenging. The Inspection was more in tune with the emotional aspect of the human experience. Those are the types of films I’ve always wanted to be a part of: things that challenge the status quo. I’ve been fortunate to have had opportunities in comedy and drama, because sometimes in the industry you can get pigeonholed.”

When it comes to Venezuelan representation in media, consider Gian Franco Rodriguez’s turn as Victor Hugo, Halston’s lover on the eponymous Netflix show. In the show and in real life, Hugo was regarded as a dubious character, who despite his own ambitions and the art he created went down in fashion history as a “Venezuelan call boy,” in the words of the late and great André Leon Talley. It’s maybe not a step in the right direction as far as positive representation on screen, but he did introduce a lot of people to arepas Venezolanas.

“That role was amazing,” Dominguez remarked with a laugh. “There’s been times where I’ve told my own family that there’s such a lack of representation — or there’s been misrepresentation — of how Latinos are [portrayed]. They throw us all in the same row, so it’s key to raise awareness that every country has a different culture.”

The conversation veers into who he wants to work with in the future: “Oscar Isaac, Antonio Banderas for sure, Tom Hardy, and Denzel Washington,” he said as we dug further into the representation and audience understanding. He’s excited for the future, and he should be; he appeared in the series finale of the (since cancelled) Gossip Girl reboot on HBO. Dominguez has a bright career ahead of him. More importantly, he’s aware that he’s lifting as he climbs, and by being visible he’s giving a new generation of young Latino actors another example that it’s possible to make it in Hollywood.

“It’s a double-edged sword, because the role should go to the people that are best for the role and that identify or that are giving truth [to the character], but at the same time, to what extent are we going to draw the line? I don’t want to be stereotyped into just playing in one segment or one role or just a Latino role. We’re everywhere; we make up so much of the population, not only this country, but all the world. We also exist in all the other spaces, especially artistically.”

The legendary labor leader, famed for founding the United Farm Workers of America alongside Cesar Chavez in 1962 and coming up with the rallying cry “si se puede” (yes we can), had her work introduced to a wider audience by way of appearing in Gutsy, the new Apple TV+ docuseries based off of Hilary and Chelsea Clinton’s The Book of Gutsy Women. The series, showcasing impactful women in U.S. history, features interviews with Huerta and her daughters. Among other things, they discuss their work for the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which actively fights for communities of color in Central California.

Huerta began organizing long before starting her namesake foundation. In 1955, after quitting a job as a teacher and moving to Delano, California, she began to quietly organize what would become the now-famous Delano Grape Strike. Collaborating with Cesar Chavez, then a member of the Community Service Organization (still active today as Centro CSO), Huerta encouraged the farm workers in Delano to push for better working conditions, and after ten years of working person-to-person and building people power, the farm workers began the strike in 1965. Following the success of the strike, Chavez and Huerta would go on to organize action among thousands of agricultural workers, first through the Community Service Organization and then through various other organizations that would eventually coalesce as United Farm Workers.

Years later, the work continues with her own Foundation. As highlighted in Gutsy, it’s a family affair: her daughter Lori is heavily featured in the episode, alongside her youngest daughter Camila, who serves as the Executive Director of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. “[Camila] quit her job with a health fund in San Francisco, where she was getting a very good salary, to come and help me start the foundation for hardly any salary at all,” says Huerta in the episode. “We started out with a $100,000 grant from the Puffin Foundation and she grew us to a $6 million organization. I’m sure by growing up [surrounded by the farm workers] movement they all had gutsy moments that they had lived through; each one of my daughters has a gutsy story that they can tell,” Huerta told LATINA from her office in Bakersfield, California.

Today, the Dolores Huerta Foundation broadens its scope beyond farm workers’ rights. Based in Bakersfield, the organization has distributed COVID-19 vaccines to over 8,000 people, and has organized in over 200 schools in 17 different school districts. Huerta says that the key to reaching out to the families of these schools is through youth organizers.

“I think that organizing is a very special skill and that organizers can make the difference,” she says about the new generation. “I love to quote Cesar Chavez on this: he once told a younger college student joining the movement: ‘when you go to school, you can learn about history, you can study history, you can write about history, you can talk about history — but when you’re an activist, you can make history.’”

LATINA spoke to Huerta about her life of activism, the importance of the young Latino vote, and fighting back against racism within the Latino community.

This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Can you tell me about the energy in the days of the Delano Grape Strike and how you organized those workers?

Huerta: “I started as a volunteer organizer with the Community Service Organization in 1955. I was a volunteer for four years until I got a position with them as Political Director. Cesar [Chavez] and I left after they voted down an organizing project for farm workers, and that’s when we formed the National Farm Workers Association — we didn’t want the growers to know that we were organizing a union. We took three years to organize under the umbrella of the NFWA and then the strike broke out in 1965. We merged with this other organization, the Agriculture Workers Organizing Committee, and that’s when we became the United Farm Workers. And then we were out in the open. There was a lot of violence: people beaten up, threatened with rifles, pesticides sprayed on strikers, and five killed.”

After all of these years, do you feel like significant progress has been made?

We’ve made some advances. Some of the laws that we passed in both CSO and the United Farm Workers have benefited a lot of workers. We passed a law so people could get their driver’s license and ballots in Spanish and other languages, so you didn’t have to find a deputy registrar. We passed a number of laws to help immigrants get public assistance. We passed disability insurance for farmworkers. We passed agriculture labor relations laws so that farm workers could vote for a union because they were excluded from the National Labor Relations Act. We passed unemployment insurance for farmers. These went through the California State Legislature and then through Congress while we were lobbying in the 70s and 80s. Constituents put pressure through letter-writing, going to their offices, and emails. You have to put pressure on these people to pass laws.

How did you get constituents to listen to you?

By grassroots organizing — meeting with families and working in their homes. We do the same with my foundation right now. An example: a high school district expelled over 2000 students of color in one year. We met [individually] with the families of the students, in their homes, and then [eventually] we brought them together. We had over 150 parents, and [helped them to] file a lawsuit against the school district.

In the age of “Instagram Activism,” can you speak to the difference between on-the-ground organizing vs mobilizing via digital platforms?

When people mobilize, they’re already on the same page. They already know what the issue is, and come together to march or protest. Organizing is when you’re talking to people that don’t know how to solve the problem. They know there’s a problem there, but they don’t have any idea of how to solve it. That’s where person-to-person organizing becomes very important.

I know you’ve also been pushing for representation as far as Latino politicians and having us represented within caucuses…what has that process been like?

Our organization was able to get 84,000 people to sign up for the census in the Central Valley of California. We did redistricting with our own demographer in four different counties, which are bigger than some states. We did community surveys and presented them in community hearings. All of our maps were adopted by the independent commission, so now we have an additional assembly seat, an additional congressional seat, and a seat that represents the Latino community and communities of color like Black, Asian, Hindu, and Sikh.

Something that has really been on the mind of a lot of young Latino people is the anti-Black racism within our community and society’s reckoning with that since the summer of 2020. That’s recently come to the fore in California with LA Council Member Nuri Martinez’s racist comments. Can you speak to the importance of that racial reckoning within the Latino community when you lobby for representation?

I think what happened with all of those [politicians] is that power and greed blinded them. I consider their actions a betrayal of our community, of the Black community, the Indigenous community, the Asian community, and their constituents of color. They betrayed all of us by the statements. We all have to continue to fight against colorism and racism that exists in the Latino community. We have to keep reminding people where this comes from: slavery. Indigenous people were the first slaves. We have to remember that the reason that [white and white-passing Latinos] justify the slavery of all of us is because of our color. A lot of people don’t remember where they came from. If your skin is lighter, you have a better job opportunity because colourism and racism exist at every level of our society. Oftentimes, in our families, when a baby is born, we celebrate him porque esta bien guërito” [because he is so blonde], and I say we have to change that narrative and start also saying que bonita la niña porque está bien prieta” [that little girl’s dark skin is so beautiful]. We have to change that narrative within our own families.

A lot of people my age in organizing circles got into that work because they felt hopeless in voting. What would you say to those young organizers?

You have to vote. This is the foundation of our democracy. Once we elect somebody to office, we have to stay on top of them — the corporations and the lobbyists, we have to be in their offices every day. In 2023, with our California health care plan, people 50 years and above are going to [have health coverage] even if they’re undocumented. How did we do that? By electing good people to our state legislature! Electing a good governor, and then doing the lobbying that we needed to do to get it passed.

Another example I like to give is one of the things that we won for the farm workers were toilets! They didn’t have toilets in the fields. They didn’t have cold drinking water, and that’s one of the things that we won for them, and not only in our contracts. We passed the law — not only in California where the strike was, but all over the United States — they have to have toilets for the farm workers in the field. We had to put it into law to make it happen, that’s what young people have to understand. It’s important for us to vote. Find candidates you like and go out there and knock on doors. That was the beginning of my activism.

Something widely attributed to you is the popularization of the phrase “si se puede.” I was just thinking about the power of that phrase and how it has endured. What does it mean to you that it’s become a rallying call for the Latino community?

In Spanish, it not only means “yes we can,” but also “yes, I can.” It’s got a lot of power because of that reason. It’s singular and collective. We can make it happen, pero tenemos que estar [unidos] — we have to stand together. This is the way that we make things happen.
