Laz Alonso, from Amazon’s series “The Boys,” used his social media platform earlier this month to address the ongoing protests in Cuba and speak to the political situation of his ancestral homeland. His comments came as a response to the Black Lives Matter statement on the political situation in Cuba — a statement asserting that the U.S. embargo is “at the heart of Cuba’s current crisis.”
Alonso began by contextualizing the video and responding to the BLM statement: “I was asked to address it, being a Black man, born in the United States of America, living as a Black man in the U.S. and dealing with everything that Black people have to deal with. But also, having Cuban heritage. Coming from a family who immigrated to the U.S. to give me opportunities that they did not have under an [oppressive system].”
