What happens when you blend a passion for soccer with a flair for photography? You create your own World Cup player cards, of course! That’s precisely what Monica Zulema did. The 23-year-old Los Angeles-based photographer was struck by inspiration while working her retail job and hunting for soccer posters to adorn her bedroom. She stumbled upon vintage images of women in soccer jerseys, sparking the idea for a personal project: soccer player cards featuring diverse women from all the countries participating in the 2022 World Cup.
This endeavor was a true community effort. With the support of her friend and model, Sarita Fernandez, Zulema sourced models to represent their countries. Mat Davis, the owner of Saturdays Football, provided both the space and the soccer jerseys for the photo shoots. Zulema’s creative partner and boyfriend, Guicho Palma, assisted with production.
What began as a bedroom decoration idea has blossomed into a project that connects women in Zulema’s community and inspires young Latinas to realize their dreams. “I’m thrilled that young Latinas are discovering my work and reaching out to tell me that I inspire them,” Zulema shares with LATINA over Zoom.
This project is a shining example of creating your own opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to you. “I want to show creatives that they can pursue their passions and succeed. You don’t need to be hired to bring your project to life,” Zulema asserts, noting that the project has expanded her following and opened new doors.
As for what’s next, Zulema remains enamored with capturing beauty in every corner of her journey. “I’m in love with everywhere I go and believe there’s beauty in every corner – my goal is to capture every corner,” she tells LATINA.
