Staff’s Note on Hispanic Heritage Month

This past May, we re-launched our platform with a new vision and a new look. We committed to creating a space that celebrated distinct cultures, voices, and stories. We told ourselves that above all else, we wanted to avoid being put in a box. We’ve all experienced this box – at school, in work, in life.

Our mission is not easy – not because of you all, but because of the environment we live in. Because, more often than not, the world does want to put us in a box.

Yesterday, a new report showed that just 7% of major films in 2019 featured a lead Hispanic or Latino actor. Yet, we make up nearly 19% of the population.

This past year, Latinas earned $0.55 for every dollar paid to non-Latino white men. We don’t have to tell you how frustrating this is: you already know.

But, get this: we’re also one of the fastest growing demographics in the U.S. In the last decade, we accounted for over half of the country’s population growth. We’re driving economic growth. More and more Latinos are going to college.

So let’s work together: to amplify voices, to break barriers, and to celebrate our culture. This month means different things for different people. Some love it, some don’t. But we’re going to keep doing what we always do: hype each other up.

And we’re sure as hell going to celebrate, because let’s face it, Latinos love a good reason to party and so many remarkable individuals have fought to get us to where we are today.

Keep your eyes peeled this month for new partnerships, in-person events, and a celebration of those that paved the way for us. Let’s show the world what we’re made of.

Love,

Team Latina
