Dimelo: 5 Ways to Raise a ‘Chingona’

4. Teach her to be her own best friend

One of my favorite children's recording artists is Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. Take a listen to the lyrics of Gotta Be You. The best line? "Everybody wanna have a best friend, but your best friend gotta be you." Why? Because no matter how awesome they may be, our girls needs to know they are awesome enough to not care when other people don't like them.

5. Break with tradition

Latino and Hispanic boys get to be macho but Latina girls are taught to be obedient and put their families first. I'm all for respect for self and for others, but when your little girl says she wants to be a doctor when she grows up, high five her and inwardly squee for raising a girl more focused on her future than on the kind of dress she might get married in.

And that's a wrap for this week on Dimelo. I'll see you next week, my friends.
