Why You Need to Watch the Latin Grammys

The 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards airs live tonight (8–11 p.m. ET) on Univision from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. In case you need a reason to watch, here are eight of them:

1) Granted, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” is one hot collaboration. But I can’t wait to see the New York–born songstress perform “Looking for Paradise” with Spanish singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz.

2) Calle 13’s Rene Perez has promised to be on his best behavior after offending Puerto Rican and Colombian politicians with his political T-shirts during Los Premios MTV last month. I’m hoping he doesn’t go too soft on us during his acceptance speech (or speeches). Residente and Visitante have five nominations and are bound to win at least one.

3) Speaking of Calle 13, the Boricua brothers are set to take the stage with Fania all-star Rubén Blades to sing “La Perla.” Joining them will be the acrobats from Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère. It’s like seeing two shows for the price of one.

4) Oscar D’León’s “Llorarás” propels me to the dance floor every time. And though the Venezuelan singer will most likely perform something from his nominated salsa album Tranquilamente…Tranquilo, I’m still looking forward to seeing him. Oscar, it’s been too long.

5) Known as “the voice of the voiceless ones,” Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa passed away this year at the age of 74. The Latin Recording Academy is planning a surprise in honor of the icon, whose last album, Cantora, is up for three awards.

6) Here’s one for the history books: World-renowned singer Omara Portuondo will be the first Cuban national to present at the Latin Grammys.

7) Considered the Elton John of Mexico, Juan Gabriel was honored last night as the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year. And rightly so, he’s sold 100 million records and written 1,500 songs, and tonight, he’ll sing one of them just for us. I vote for “Hasta que te conoci.”

8) And last but not least, you should watch because it’s bound to be a big anniversary celebration and you don’t want to miss it!
