"Ugly Betty," the Musical?
"Ugly Betty," the Musical?
Following months of bad news (first the show got benched by ABC, then it was hastily moved to Friday nights—TV's death slot—and yesterday it was inexplicably snubbed by the Emmys), América Ferrera and Ugly Betty finally have something to sing about. Literally. The ABC show plans to do a musical episode next season to mix things up, and Vanessa Williams (who plays Betty’s nemesis, Wilhelmina Slater, on the show), told TVGuideMagazine.com all about it. “Our musical episode is back on! I think it's going to be our 16th episode of the season."
The reason for Williams’s choice of words—“back on”—is that the decision to make a musical episode of Betty is not a new one. In 2007, the show had plans for América & Co. to burst into song in an episode, and even hired Hairspray composer Marc Shaiman to write some of the music, but the idea was later axed for unexplained reasons.
Williams added that Shaiman will probably not be involved with next season’s musical episode, and that it is likely an in-house music director will assume the role of composer. "The man who does our original scoring will be writing some of the music. I think it's going to be a combination of original material and some really popular pop tunes—similar to Moulin Rouge, pop tunes integrated into a musical show. We're all really excited about it. I'm sure Wilhelmina's material will be really biting!"
I like the idea of combining original and popular music, and I would love to see Justin (Mark Indelicato) belt out some Michael Jackson in the episode! (Remember when he reenacted scenes from Hairspray on the subway to entertain and educate his musically challenged alpha-male dad? The kid has talent! Check it out:
But what say you, Vivo Por TVians: Do you like the idea of an Ugly Betty musical episode? And what popular pop tune would you choose for Betty and the rest of the cast to sing if you had your pick?
