In the musical, the Emmy-winning 27-year-old will play the role of Roxie Hart, a fictional showgirl who has been portrayed by many actresses on Broadway such as Gwen Verdon and actress/dancer Ann Reinking. Also, Renée Zellweger portrayed Hart in the 2002 musical film Chicago. These are big shoes to fill – but we’re more than confident that America can do it!
According to Pop Watch, Ferrera’s Chicago stint as Roxie begins on Nov. 7 and after she’s done, she will reportedly make her official Broadway debut in The Miss Firecracker Contest. The 1984 play, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Hensley, centers on a Mississippi woman who enters a local beauty contest in hopes of trying to both improve herself and escape her small town. Perez Hilton reports that Ferrera will play the Mississippi woman. The play is set to premiere next spring.
We can’t wait to see Ferrera belt out tunes in Chicago and play the lead in Hensley’s play – congrats to her!
