Demi Lovato told MTV News about the change she has seen in herself since entering rehab a year ago due to a history of emotional and physical issues has been radical. The part-Mexican actress/singer left her tour with the Jonas Brothers a year ago to seek help and now feels like a new woman.
“I feel like I'm a totally different person today,” Lovato said, “and I've grown up a lot, and I've overcome a lot, so I'm excited about where I am in my life today.” Since her release this past spring, the former Disney star has opened up tremendously about her history of cutting behavior and eating disorders. Lovato has spoken about her struggle on numerous talk shows, including her experience being bullied as a child on Ellen.
Lovato said that she didn’t want to be in treatment when she first arrived and developed a “fake it till you make it” mentality. “I stayed in there, and I started believing that I was in there for the right reasons,” she said. On her job as a role model to teenagers, Lovato said it is a responsibility – not a burden. “I feel like there are certain choices in my life that I am faced with every single day, and I think, well, ‘How would my little sister feel if I would do this? And how would she feel about this?’” she said.
Lovato career skyrocketed this summer, thanks to her smash single “Skyscraper” rising through iTunes’ ranks and the adoration of her fans. Even though her crazy schedule keeps her extremely busy, Lovato still squeezes in time for a good cause – with the extra perk of hanging out with her friends, the Kardashian sisters, whom she is close to. According to Celebuzz, Lovato performed a special concert for an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition this past weekend. The performance was for the Walker family, whose son committed suicide in 2009 after being bullied by his peers. It's a cause close to Demi's heart, as she admitted that much of her insecurity about her body and weight stemmed from being bullied as a child.
It looks like the dark days are over for Lovato. Just two days via Twitter, the teen star shared her jubilant mood with her almost five million followers. “My fans are asking how I'm doing... And lemme tell you, I'm not okay... I'm doing AMAZING!!! :) happier and healthier than ever before!!!” she wrote.
