Hispanic Heritage Month: The Best Pop Culture Moments in 2012

We’re taking a look back on the larger than life moments some of our favorite super-estrellas have had this past year.

1. HHM Pop Culture: Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato Has the Best Comeback, Ever

Singer Demi Lovato has had a tough few years. After going into treatment for bulimia, bipolar disorder, and self-mutilation, she came back strong last year and was unstoppable this year. Her MTV special “Stray Strong” didn’t shy away from talking about what she went through. She’s since made headlines as one of the new judges on The X Factor, she hosted the 2012 Teen Choice Awards, and word is she’s also working on her fourth studio album.

2. HHM Pop Culture: Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara Gets Engaged

The bombshell actress got engaged to longtime boyfriend Nick Loeb. Shortly after celebrating her 40th birthday, Sofia was spotted wearing an enormous diamond (jury’s still out on whether or not she really handed her fiancé a $10 million prenup).

3. HHM Pop Culture: Gloria Estefan

Gloria Estefan Hits Glee

In a lackluster and somewhat bizarre third season, Glee had one bright spot—a guest appearance by Latina cover girl Gloria Estefan. She played Maribel, mother to Santana (actress Naya Rivera, another Latina cover star) with wisdom and humor. She steered Santana in the right direction (see how the rest of the McKinley High seniors did to get you up to speed for the new season).

4. HHM Pop Culture: Shakira

Shakira is Expecting

Superstar Shakira may be slowing down a bit—she finally confirmed that she’s pregnant with her first child. She and boyfriend Gerard Piqué will be welcoming a little one next year, reports claim.¡felicidades, Shaki!

5. HHM Pop Culture: William Levy

William Levy Looks Hot on Dancing with the Stars

Our favorite cubano danced his way into America’s hearts on the last season of Dancing with the Stars. We have a sneaking suspicion his looks kept the audience voting—he and partner Cheryl Burke finished third.

6. HHM Pop Culture: Jessica Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez Sings Her Heart Out on Idol

William Levy wasn’t the only one wowing us on competition shows this year. We rooted for Los Angeles native Jessica Sanchez to be the next American Idol. Sanchez didn’t take home first prize but she’s still number one as far as we’re concerned. Check out her best Idol performances.

7. HHM Pop Culture: Camila Alves & Matthew McConaughey

Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey Tie the Knot

Ah, amor! Brazilian model Camila Alves wed longtime partner Matthew McConaughey in a private ceremony this June. After six years and two gorgeous children, we were definitely happy to see the two make it official—and we swooned over Alves’ gorgeous dress.

8. HHM Pop Culture: Rosario Dawson

Rosario Dawson Gets Political

Rosario Dawson is getting involved in this election season. The actress sat down to talk with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about Voto Latino, the organization before the 2004 presidential elections she created to encourage Latinos to participate. After speaking to a crowd during a DREAM Act protest, she sat on a Huffington Post-hosted jobs panel at the Democratic National Convention. Dawson 2016?

9. HHM Pop Culture: Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria Makes Her DNC Speech

The Desperate Housewives also spoke up at the DNC. Co-chair of President Obama’s re-election campaign, Longoria inspired us with her speech. She touched on affordable education and attacked Romney’s tax plans. We think the president is lucky to have her on his team!

10. HHM Pop Culture: Gigant3s

They Must Be Gigant3s

We sat on Ticketmaster.com to try to snag tickets to a historic tour starring three incredible cantantes. Marc Anthony, Chayanne, and Marco Antonio Solis kicked off a 14-city tour this spring, packing stadiums across the country.
