After the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Irma and Maria, the Bronx native was moved to make a commit to the Caribbean island and the people of Puerto Rico. Fernandez told News 12 The Bronx, "My commitment to love and protect my homeland happened a long time ago."

Without thinking twice, Fernandez threw a wedding at a Hunts Point venue in the Bronx where 100 guests attended and brought gifts to be shipped to La Isla del Encanto. She even created a registry including flashlights, water bottles, fans, and even feminine products. The new bride did not accept any personal gifts as guest showered the ceremony with items to help those still suffering in Puerto Rico.
