I have been accused of being overly talkative. I tend to interrupt others, and I don’t like it at all. It’s a bad habit that I have worked on for the good of my relationships. I am trying my best to listen because interrupting your significant other, a friend, or a co-worker can be downright disrespectful.
The GenderTimer App may just be my saving grace, and that of those who speak over others. This app was particularly designed to track who is talking the most — men or women. Turns out men tend to interrupt women a lot more, particularly in the workplace.
Take this scenario: You’re in a company meeting and in the middle of sharing a great idea, when a male colleague speaks over you and dominates the room and the conversation. You feel terrible, like your ideas don’t matter.
Well, this new iOS, Android and web app wants to shed some light on this workplace and social issue. The hope is that the GenderTimer App will reveal data on how often men and women speak up. This way both men and women will improve their communication and listening skills.
How does it work? When you are in a meeting or at social gathering, you open the app and tap when a male speaks and then tap when a female speaks. Once your powwow is over you stop the timer and get a tally of how many minutes the women spoke, versus how many minutes the men spoke.
Bottom line, this app aims to bring awareness to the gender bias in work and life. It’s safe to say that women would get mucho points if I were present!
