It was a night of surprises, accolades, camaraderie and cocktails at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California on January 12, 2014. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler continue to prove that women in comedy are a force to be reckoned. I kept thinking throughout the telecast how much I’d love to see the duo host every award show for the remainder of the season! Girl power!
But before we talk about the show highlights, let’s dish about fashion. Sofia Vergara wins top honors for her voluminous Zac Posen gown and statement necklace from Lorraine Shwartz. When the Golden Globe’s official Twitter account posted the first photo of her ensemble, I swear I heard my entire feed gasp at once.
Other favorites include Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera, Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren, Margot Robbie in Gucci, and Amy Adams in Valentino.
Honorable mention goes to Jennifer Lawrence who wore the most talked about dress of the night: Dior Haute Couture. During the telecast, people were wrapping themselves up in a duvet blanket and wrapped belts around it to jokingly recreate her look. At one point, even a pug pup gets in on the action when his owner dolled him up to resemble the “Hunger Games” ensemble! It was all in good fun so I’m sure she must have had a laugh over it!
Plus she had her longtime on/off boyfriend Nicholas Hoult by her side the whole night. She pretty much confirmed they are back together by planting a huge kiss on his lips to celebrate her big win.
Two of the best-dressed stars of the night were in full bloom: Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde. Up until last night, the “Scandal” star hadn’t even confirmed she and her new husband Nnamdi Asomugha were even expecting! The extremely private star kept it a secret as long as she could, but the baby bump protruding from her custom Balenciaga gown made it undeniable. Her football star hubby didn’t walk the red carpet with her but he was right by her side at the after party.
Olivia Wilde had jaws on the floor when she hit the carpet in a sparkly green Gucci gown. I don’t think I’ve seen a woman make a baby bump look so glamorous! Fiance and fellow actor Jason Sudeikis was no where to be seen but it looks like he was just trying to keep the spotlight on Olivia.
Did you guys catch Julia Louis Dreyfus flip-flopping between two tables since she was nominated for both a film and her TV show “Veep?” Her pre-planned gags with Poehler and Fey, including eating a hot dog, had the audience in hysterics! But that moment from the telecast came in as a close second to Jacqueline Bisset’s acceptance speech.
Big winners of the night included director Alfonso Cuaron’s first Golden Globe for his film Gravity, Robin Wright for “Best Actress In A TV Drama” for her work on the Netflix series House of Cards, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence taking home the “Best Actress” and “Best Supporting Actress” (respectively) for American Hustle, and 12 Years A Slave took home top honors as “Best Film.”
Breaking Bad also took home awards for “Best Drama” and “Best Actor” for lead Bryan Cranston, beating out House of Cards. I might be biased as a fan of the latter but I feel like they were robbed simply because it was Breaking Bad’s last season.
What were some of your favorite Golden Globe moments?
