The ECOCERT organization “evaluates the raw materials used in our formulas to ensure ingredients are derived from renewable resources, manufactured by environmentally friendly processes and are free from GMO and synthetics,” says Harper of the indelible certificate the beauty brand has held since the start.

Since launching its e-commerce destination in 2010, Tata Harper Skincare’s influence has reached a retail high, expanding its retailer partnerships with beauty titans, including Sephora, Net-a-Porter, Blue Mercury, and many more. Expanding into the Middle East and China felt like a milestone for the founder, affirming that “this brand I created could truly be a leader in the green beauty movement on a global scale.”

For what’s next, Harper shares that the brand is further developing its refillable product range to minimize consumer waste.

In late April, on Manhattan’s West Side, Paula’s Choice opened the doors to its Beautypedia Bodega activation, for one day only. Shelves were stocked with a selection of Paula’s Choice’s latest products alongside the brand’s classics. Consider it a library of skincare, all in celebration of the new Beautypedia Skin Care Ingredient Checker, a new tool where consumers can upload a skincare product’s label to learn about each ingredient, and the brand’s latest product innovations.

Half of TikTok would have stormed the scene if they could, given that the hashtag #Paulaschoice racks up over 600 million views to date, with users boasting the marvels of what the skincare brand has done for their skin.

At the center of it all is Paula’s Choice Senior Director of Innovation and Formula Development, Julio Lamberty, a cosmetic chemist, who has been with the brand formally for nearly three years, but had already worked on product development with Paula’s Choice over a decade ago. Lamberty was enticed by Paula’s Choice’s skin education approach, which the brand pioneered and has delivered to consumers since the early 2000s.

Lamberty, born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised by Puerto Rican parents, landed in the cosmetic industry by chance. Lamberty tells LATINA that he first pursued the medical field as an undergraduate pre-med student. His first job after graduation from Saint Peter’s University was as a fragrance chemist at Dragoco Inc.; the company then eventually merged with Haarmann & Reimer to become Symrise in 2003, he notes. “Little did I know that I would be able to apply so much of the science I had [learned] in school to develop skincare products in the cosmetic industry.”

In his 33 years of experience as an innovator in cosmetics, Lamberty has held multiple senior and executive positions in research, business development, operations, procurement, and more. He has worked with beauty companies including Avon, Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care, Elizabeth Arden, and Sephora throughout his career. He also helped launch First Aid Beauty and Farmacy.

And his path continues to evolve; you can consider Lamberty a skincare formulation connoisseur whose Latin American upbringing has played a pivotal part in his success and motivation. The chemist has developed products that may already play an important role in your current skincare routine. Hint: Remember the Avon brochures that made their rounds across the table during a coffee nightcap con las tias?

“I was excited to join a company with such a focus on efficacious, science-backed products,” he says. Lamberty took along with him all the milestones he had already accomplished to begin leading the Innovation and Formulation team at Paula’s Choice three years ago, joining the brand at a time when it was flourishing. “Paula’s Choice was growing, creating effective products, utilizing proven skincare ingredients based on cited scientific research and clinical testing.”

The Wu-Tang Clan holds high ground within music culture, and following the legacy built from scratch by the Wu-Tang members, came Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Hulu’s three-season biopic series that lent viewers a voyage into the definitive years of the Wu-Tang Clan’s rise and journey to recognition, plus a glimpse into the wardrobe straight out of the slums of Shaolin — as they’d often rap.

With any period piece, the task of immersing an audience into a specific timeline traces back to wardrobe. For Colombian costume designer Melissa Vargas, her drive for research helped her analyze Wu-Tang’s elemental style during the ‘90s, their environment, and what their symbols of success looked like.

Vargas was hands-on with Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, otherwise known as RZA, as he not only executively produced Wu-Tang: An American Saga alongside Alex Tse, Method Man and Brian Grazer, but also lived that era with his crew.

“The world knows who Wu-Tang is, and I love any kind of period project that I could do,” Vargas tells LATINA. “It was nerve-wracking at the same time because Wu-Tang is alive and well, and trying to make sure that we’re doing it [costume design] in an authentic way felt like a big responsibility to me. But I feel like I was ready to take that on.”

Vargas, with projects such as Bleed For This (set in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s), Finding Steve Mcqueen (set in the ‘70s), and the soon-to-be-released film A Thousand and One (set in the ‘90s and early 2000s) under her belt, finds her work to be an extension of her passion for history. Vargas finds endless inspiration in replicating age-defining ensembles — even if it comes with the challenge of re-creating pieces that cease to exist today.

Heirlooms of Ralph Lauren Polo Sport, FILA, Wu-Tang memorabilia and GUESS archives embellished the actors’ wardrobes in season three of the series. The New York-based costume designer has a hefty Rolodex of private Polo collectors and vintage dealers she enlisted for the project to help procure these items, mentioning that for her and her costume team, these rare pieces were treated like gold, protected as they went from one location to another, with all eyes on the rented items. Her trusted leather wholesaler Daniels Leather helped bring a couple of Vargas’ sketches to life. Vargas frequented vintage stores scattered throughout New York City such as Metropolis Vintage and L Train to source for the actors’ wardrobe. When it came to crafting samples patched with the Wu-Tang Logo, even those luminary features of Wu-Tang merchandise present in the series were designed with Power’s guidance, Co-founder and Executive Producer of the Wu-Tang Clan.

“[The Wu-Tang Clan] were all about their branding, which is not necessarily the most common thing for artists at that time,” Vargas says. And since they were very clear about how they wanted to brand themselves, Vargas mentions that had a lot to do with Power as well, as he still runs all of the Wu-Tang merch. “Replicating these pieces, they were all about promoting themselves as a group. One of the pieces that stood out to me the most were these leather jerseys, so I worked with [Daniels Leather] to make the base for us and cut it. I gave them a sample to copy and then our tailor cut out each letter and stitched it on perfectly and we got it done.”

Branding aside, the characters’ played with their Wu-Tang Clan personas through a loosely fit wardrobe and heavy accessorizing. “​​The jewelry was a really big deal. When you see photographs of them in 1992, they’re very different from the photographs of them in 1996 — when they’ve had their success. [I was looking at] what that meant to them, and what are the things that they coveted or were aspiring to have. And I believe the jewelry was one of them that culturally I think is very important.”

Throughout season three Vargas used jewelry as a symbol of transition for the Wu-Tang Clan, from their struggles to their achievements, to their upswing into fame. Vargas went back to her collection of photographs, especially RZA’s original photo shoots with his signature spike rings, to design the signatory rings with jewelry designer Anthony Lalwani, who made molds of the design above.

In this final honorary season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga, there was a clear understanding of who these characters were, thanks to Ashton Sanders’ portrayal of RZA, Dave East as Method Man, TJ Atoms as Ol’ Dirty Bastard and more. Yet, many episodes were a spin-off of RZA’s dreams of what the journey of certain characters’ writing processes looked like across each of their albums, Vargas says.

Vargas not only intentionally carried out the impact of the Wu-Tang Clan’s style choices, from their ill-fitting denim, oversized leather jerseys emblazoned with the signature Wu-Tang ‘W” and personality-stamped jewelry pieces, but she also got to explore her connection to New York style that she formed by growing up in the boroughs. She tells LATINA, in New York, inspiration and individuality are everywhere. “Even though they are a big group, they all don’t dress the same — each character has their own individual style, and I wanted that to be very present in the series. I related that to being a New Yorker and finding your own style, and what that means over time, and how your experiences will influence that.”

While growing up, sisters Roshelly and Shanelly Pena would have never thought they’d one day become chefs. Let alone chefs who curate savory cannabis-infused menus — yes, entire menus — of what they refer to as “power dishes,” desserts, and mocktails, all centered around flower. The sisters turned business partners are founders of the Higher Dining Experience, a lifestyle cannabis brand that meshes ambiance with Latin flavors and a side of high times.

Higher Dining has become a hub for cannabis users and newcomers alike, looking to flavorfully experiment with the psychoactive. On the menu, you might find carne asada with a sauté of THC-infused chimichurri, guava chicken wings made with canna oil, or zooted cinnamon toast crunch cereal that you can munch on while getting baked. “Our goal is to always heighten the [THC] experience,” the sisters told LATINA. The Higher Dining culinary series is a social and interactive invitation to taste different strains, handmade pre-rolled joints, and microdosed creations that reach a maximum of 35 milligrams of THC.

“We love hosting events, we love cooking, and we love weed.” Roshelly puts it simply. In 2017, they came up with the plan to host their first cannabis dinner party in their mom’s backyard in Northern New Jersey. “The day of our first event, it started pouring, so everyone had to take it inside. It was so funny — seeing how my mom, who was so against this plant, allowed our guests to roll up at her dining room table and enjoy the medicine, the event, and the experience we were creating.”

If there’s one thing you’ll sense above all else in a Higher Dining main course, it’s Shanelly and Roshelly’s Dominican roots. It all started in their family kitchen. “[Our] mom’s always been a host — like a Dominican Martha Stewart — and has always been so elaborative with whatever she hosts. Even if you go to her home and you’re just going to have coffee, she makes it an experience.” That taste of Latinidad seeps through their dishes. As does Roshelly and Shanelly’s acute understanding of varying cannabis strains. Higher Dining has built a synergistic community and, as Roshelly puts it, has given their clients an experience where they can enjoy a joint alongside a curated meal.

Today, the drug-war era stigma against marijuana use persists, despite its mass commercialization across the U.S. A survey on the now billion-dollar trade, “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Cannabis Industry,” reports that as of 2022, only 23% of executive roles are held by women in the cannabis industry, and only 12% by racial minorities.

The Harlem-born founders are aiming to change the conversation about what cannabis can be while challenging those statistics. Back in 2017, when the Pena sisters first started their business, Sour Diesel and Haze may have been the more commonly known strains, but now there’s so much more variety to experience. “We want our guests to always have a great experience that is also tasteful. Everything about the [cannabis] plant plays a role, from the THC levels to the terpenes (aromatic oils that give weed its distinctive smell). And it tastes good!” They source the “medicine” — a term they use to refer to the flower — themselves, mentioning that even by smelling the strain, you can tell the kind of high you’ll have. “We classify the strains based on the terpenes known to the strain. We also create our own flavor profiles based on what we smell and taste,” they explained. By using Grade-A cannabis, they ensure their clients are provided quality supply, especially since each strain has a different taste and effect.

Shanelly and Roshelly envision their events as a place where people can come together, and feel safe and free while enjoying the use of the recreational and medicinal plant. Roshelly, a pastry chef, and Shanelly, fresh out of culinary school when this all began, went into it with a “let’s try it” mentality. When the very first Higher Dining supper was a huge hit, the question of what was next was now on the table. “How are we going to provide for our [cannabis] community?” Though a brick-and-mortar location is in the works, the sisters don’t plan to shut the door on hosting pop-ups in different cities. “I think that’s where Higher Dining began and it’s kind of our essence.”

Tucked away in the far right corner of my bathroom sits the last tube of ointment prescribed by my dermatologist to soothe my eczema. That was over a year ago, marking the longest period of time I have gone without a flare-up. My skin has been thriving despite the twenty-something years that I’ve had eczema. Yet now there’s a fresh itch on my left finger I just can’t get to budge. My eczema has been full of inconsistencies; it is, in part, the reason I sometimes slack on my body-care regimen. It’s hard needing to always consider that something can creep up and set my skin off.

From a young age, I’ve committed to doing everything in my power to try to minimize the discomfort of eczema. I knew that finding a dermatologist who made me feel seen, not just by my condition, but as a Latina, would be the first step in this journey. That’s when I met Dr. Miriam Casal who leads a dermatology practice in Elmhurst, Queens, a neighborhood home to a large Latin community. Dr. Casal’s entire team is Latina or Hispanic, which makes PielViva Aesthetic Dermatology feel like home. Finding a feeling of safety and comfort at the practice has been half the battle to ease the pain of living with this condition, and the rest has been all about sticking to what works, educating myself, and being in tune with my body.

Doctors advise proper diagnosis and treatment plans from a dermatologist or healthcare provider, but limitations to healthcare can often or sometimes be a factor, so LATINA checked in with board-certified dermatologist Laura Scott MD FAAD, and Miriam Casal MD, to better understand the skin condition and the daily habits individuals with eczema can incorporate into their regimen.

The National Eczema Association reports that at least one in ten people, whether Hispanic, Latino, Asian, Caucasian, or African American, will be affected by eczema in their lifetime. Dr. Casal defines eczema, otherwise known as atopic dermatitis, as a “chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes itchy, dry and inflamed skin.” It is not contagious. The skin barrier, which Dr. Scott says is meant to protects us from “the bad stuff,” becomes impaired, leaving the skin more prone to react to bacteria, irritants and allergens in the environment. The skin barriers’ purpose is also to keep water and moisture inside of our bodies. With eczema, people lose part of their skin barrier, putting them at higher risk of irritation and skin infection.

What’s that got to do with the incessant urge to scratch that itch?

As Dr. Scott explains, the chronic condition causes us to lose water from our skin faster, which is why people oftentimes experience dry skin more so than others, leading to constant itchiness. The more we scratch, the more the skin gets irritated, and so in certain areas, an individual can develop rashes on their body.

Where exactly can eczema show up?

Eczema can mark its territory in a number of places throughout the body. It most commonly occurs on flexural parts of the body, such as the inside of the elbow, behind the knee, the base knuckles on our hands, and even the eyelids. Daily body moisturizing, whether in the form of topical moisturizers or medication such as anti-inflammatory creams prescribed by a board-certified dermatologist, can help one heal and control flare-ups while preventing future ones from settling in.

What are some triggers for eczema-prone skin?

Dr. Casal summed up factors that can irritate eczema-prone skin: “dry skin, stress, fragrances, cleansing products, rough wool fabric, cold and dry air, and skin infections,” to name a few. “​​Avoiding the triggering factors and keeping the skin moisturized is important to avoid flare-ups.”

Dr. Scott tells LATINA that the severity of the stages of eczema differs and also depends on age. Eczema looks different in babies than it does in kids and adults. According to Dr. Scott, what dermatologists really look at is “the percentage of body surface area that is affected by eczema.”

Changes in temperature and humidity, as well as smoke and second-hand smoke can also exacerbate an eczema flare-up. I always thought that the cold weather was the sole reason why, underneath layers of the clothes, my skin felt as if it were on fire. Dr. Scott explained that “during the winter, people’s eczema can flare up, and that usually has to do with us turning on the heaters in our house causing the air to be much drier.” For some people, sweat can be an eczema trigger. To avoid this discomfort, Dr. Scott advises dressing in light cotton layers and avoiding synthetic fabrics to keep cool. In cooler temperatures, Dr. Scott recommends keeping a humidifier in the room you sleep in, a solution that can make a huge difference for people with eczema.

There’s no specific answer as to why we flare up, but we can “think” back to the aspects of our everyday lives.

Dr. Scott has her patients keep a “flare diary.” Everyone is different and there’s not one solution. But there are questions you can ask yourself. “What cleaning products have I used in the last two days? What have I eaten?” Dr. Scott mentions that during appointments, she goes through every possible trigger with her patients. She has her patients consider each part of their daily routines in relation to their flare-ups. It’s not just the foods you eat or the skin-care products you use. Some other things to consider can include candles, a new scent plug-in, or even cleaning products to wash your dishes—essentially, anything that comes in contact with your body.

Regardless of whether you’ve been able to identify all of your own triggers, Dr. Scott recommends starting with skin-care products that have been accepted by the National Eczema Association. A product receives the National Eczema Association’s seal after its ingredient list has been thoroughly cleared for top eczema triggers. Though that doesn’t mean if a product doesn’t have the seal, it’s not a good one. Dr. Scott mentioned, “if there’s a product that you know works for you, it’s okay if it doesn’t have the seal. But if you are somebody that is going through flares and are trying to look for better products, that’s always where I start.”

It may be time to rethink your bathing routine.

When winter settles in, a hot shower may be the first thing you go for to beat the chill. While it may feel good, the hot water is actually stripping moisture from the skin. For those with eczema, it can aggravate your already impaired skin barrier. As we discussed the topic, Dr. Scott reassured me that it doesn’t quite mean you should limit yourself from enjoying the little pleasures in life like hot water, as long as it’s not “piping hot” that is.

It’s all about balance. “Enjoy those first 30 to 60 seconds of hot water, then turn the temperature down when it comes time to cleanse the body,” Dr. Scott reassured us. Damp skin comes to follow after the shower, marking the perfect chance to lather up in your preferred cream or lotion.

Dr. Casal advised that flare-ups can be prevented by moisturizing the skin at least twice a day, one of those times being immediately after stepping out of the shower. Scrubbing the skin with a hard washcloth can also worsen the matter. I myself have personally always looked to the Dove Beauty Bar With Deep Moisture soap to cleanse my skin, lathering it all throughout from the neck down to the toes.

Replace the lost moisture by sealing the skin in with moisturizer.

Dr. Scott gave LATINA a crash course on the difference between a lotion, cream, and an occlusive, as well as her “holy grail” in terms of moisturizing routines.

Dermatologists consider each type of moisturizer a vehicle that ranges with different thicknesses. A lotion is water-based with a tad of moisture inside of it; due to its high water content, it may not last as long on the skin. A cream has occlusive ingredients and has less water in it than a lotion would. Dr. Casal recommends following the “three-minute rule” whether you look to a lotion or a cream as your go-to moisturizer. The rule goes as follows: within three minutes of stepping out of the shower, one should coat the skin barrier with a lather of either. An ointment, the thickest of the three, has the lowest amount of water, and is meant to seal the skin barrier up. Both doctors recommend using an unscented moisturizer and gentle unscented soap.

Creams are the perfect “in-between” for eczema patients, allowing for its thicker consistency to seep in. Dr. Scott’s holy grail is a layer of lotion or cream followed by a coat of ointment, like “slugging” which recently went viral on TikTok. The classic Vaseline Healing Jelly does the job, and can be applied on top of the eyelids and lips as well.

If you would rather use a lightweight moisturizer, Vaseline’s reformulated Intensive Care Sensitive Skin Relief Body Lotion has hydrated my skin this winter. The unscented hypoallergenic lotion contains colloidal oatmeal and was formulated with ultra-hydrating lipids that boost and strengthen the skin barrier by replenishing the ceramides we produce.

The key to treating your Eczema is doing what works for you, alongside doing research and using recommended products. In the time I’ve spent writing this article, I’ve already noticed an improvement in the appearance of the eczema rash I’m currently battling. The itch has settled, the redness has lessened, and only healing flakes remain on my knuckle, that’s how quickly proactive moisturizing and topical medications can flesh out a reaction and work in your favor. I’ve learned there are things we cannot control, but there are ways to work consciously with the skin. Rather than feeding into the sensation to itch the site, take that moment to reinforce the area with topical solution. As I’ve continued to learn how to understand my skin, I’ve curated a mental portfolio of what works and what doesn’t, and have noted all the rashes that have healed as a gentle reminder to how far my skin has come.

The relationship you have with yourself is the most important. Yet when it comes to the very romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day, we automatically embrace the holiday with open arms as a time to spoil a significant other with a present that reflects our attentiveness to the relationship.
