Yendry, “Herrera”

Yendry embraces her Dominican roots in her new single “Herrera.” In the song named after her hometown in the Dominican Republic, she puts an electronic twist on bachata music. She is captivating as she sings about a red-hot romance that’s got her going wild. “This one is for the lovers,” she wrote in a statement. Yendry continues to push Latin music to new places with her worldly sound.

Rebecca Black, “Let Her Burn”

On the 12th anniversary of her viral single “Friday,” Rebecca Black released her debut album Let Her Burn. The Mexican-American singer shows her chops as an alternative pop star across the 10-track LP. “These last 12 years have been about growing into the person I am and growing into the artist I am, and defining what I had to say and why I wanted to say that, and who I was,” she told LATINA about her musical journey. The album includes the alluring single “Crumbs” and the heartbreaking ballad “Sick To My Stomach.” One of the most powerful tracks is “Destroy Me” where she channels her angst into a frenetic, rock-infused anthem. Black sets her past on fire while blazing her own trail forward in pop.

Ludmilla and Tasha e Tracie, “Sou Má”

Brazilian superstar Ludmilla released a new girl power anthem “Sou Má,” teaming up with Brazilian hip-hop duo Tasha e Tracie. While Ludmilla is known for helping to globalize Brazilian funk, she taps into trap music this time around and flexes her rap skills. Ludmilla and Tasha e Tracie trade verses about being powerful Black women who are at the top of their game. This is a fierce and fabulous collaboration.

Pabllo Vittar and Anitta, “Balinha de Coração”

Pabllo Vittar is back with the new album “Noitada.” The Brazilian drag superstar pushes Brazilian funk music to new places with elements of electronica. Another one of Brazil’s top artists, Anitta, features on two songs from the LP, “Calma Amiga Interlude” and the alluring club banger “Balinha de Coração.” In English, “Noitada” translates to “Night Out,” and that’s exactly what Vittar soundtracks with this collection of after-hours anthems.

Manuel Medrano and Juliana, “La Primera Vez”

Two Latin Grammy Best New Artist winners are joining forces. Colombian singers Manuel Medrano and Juliana teamed up for their collaboration “La Primera Vez.” In the funky love song, both artists trade verses about a blossoming romance. Medrano’s sultry croon and Juliana’s soaring voice complement each other well in this track that pulls inspiration from the seventies. “La Primera Vez” will be the theme song for the retro movie of the same name that premieres on Netflix on Feb. 15.

Conexión Divina, “Cambio De Canción”

Conexión Divina references a few regional Mexican music classics in the new single “Cambio De Canción.” The Mexican-American girl group alludes to Christian Nodal’s “Adiós Amor” and Banda Los Sebastianes’ “A través Del Vaso” in their heartbreaking song. Lead singer Liz Trujillo sings about turning to the radio to forget an ex. On the inspiration behind the track, Conexión Divina shared in a statement, “‘Cambio de Canción’ is one of our favorite songs because it makes you connect with songs by other artists and the emotions they elicit.” The group is part of the line-up for this year’s Coachella music festival in April.

Kenia Os, “Malas Decisiones”

Kenia Os is continuing to unveil the universe behind her “K23” album. The Mexican pop star released the futuristic music video for her latest single “Malas Decisiones.” Hit-maker JonTheProducer gave Os’ Latin pop sound a disco-influenced bounce. In the dreamy dance track, she sings about the bad decisions that are going to lead her and her lover to the bedroom. Os will perform the flirty banger on her U.S. K23 Tour that kicks off in San Diego on Feb. 22.

La Santa Cecilia, “Almohada”

La Santa Cecilia put a new twist on a Latin music classic. The Mexican-American band led by La Marisoul tackles the track “Almohada” that was popularized by Mexican icon José José. La Marisoul digs deep and breathes soul into the torch song’s emotional lyrics. La Santa Celicia’s take on “Almohada” is stunning. On why La Santa Cecilia chose to cover the ballad, La Marisoul told LATINA, “This song is a jewel and a gift for you so that people in love or those who long to be with another person can feel it.” It will be included on the second part of the group’s “Cuatro Copas: Bohemia En La Finca Altozano” album.

Her new LP “Aguilera” brings together the songs from her recent EPs “La Fuerza” and “La Tormenta.” The collection includes her Latina empowerment anthem “Pa Mis Muchachas” featuring Becky G, Nicki Nicole and Nathy Peluso, and the ranchera power ballad “La Reina.” Among the new tracks, she teams up with Argentine pop star TINI for the sleek bop “Suéltame” and Mexican crooner Christian Nodal for “Cuando Me Dé la Gana.” Aguilera once again sounds incredible while tackling the ranchera genre with her mighty voice. Nodal compliments her well as they both give passionate performances that are rooted in heartbreak. “¡Échale, Christina!” Nodal shouts to her. Xtina really gives it her all on this album that pays homage to her Latina roots.

Emilia, “Tú Crees En Mí?”

Emilia is making her debut with her first album ​”Tú Crees En Mí?” The Argentine pop star definitely serves self-confidence throughout the 8-track LP. The album features her perreo-ready banger “Cuatro Veinte.” She also has stellar collaborations with other Argentine artists. The intoxicating “Intoxicao” with Nicki Nicole is a girl power anthem. Backed by hip-hop beats, Emilia and Nicole trade verses about living their best lives. Emilia also teams up with her boyfriend Duki for the steamy love song “Como Si No Importara.” About joining the Argentine artists that are crossing over, Emilia said, “It’s a pleasure and honor to be Argentine and see that we’re getting more recognition. Imagine, we’re in Con Sur, far away from everything like Miami, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Mexico, which are the larger markets.”

Leslie Grace, “Como la Primera Vez”

Leslie Grace is continuing to make her return to music. The Dominican-American singer got back into action last year with the enchanting “Bachatica.” She followed that up earlier this year with the electro-pop bop “Un Buen Día.” Grace is keeping the music coming with her new single “Como la Primera Vez.” She teams up with rising Panamanian singer Boza for the sultry love song. Backed by reggaeton beats and a Spanish guitar, they trade verses about rekindling their romance. Grace made a name for herself in bachata music, but now she’s continuing to blossom as a Latina pop star. Outside of music, Grace made her big screen debut last year in the movie “In the Heights.” Next up, she will play Barbara Gordon in the upcoming HBO Max movie “Batgirl.”

Julieta Venegas, “Caminar Sola”

Julieta Venegas strikes a more serious chord with her new single “Caminar Sola.” In March, she returned to music with her single “Mismo Amor,” in which she embraced a disco-pop sound. In “Caminar Sola,” Venegas sings about the dangers that women face while walking home alone at night. Producer Álex Anwandter soundtracks her chilling lyrics with noir-like strings and piano. This sounds like Venegas’ most sophisticated track to date, but it’s also sobering in how it delves into women’s fears of harassment. Venegas sings from the soul in this powerful anthem. About teaming up with Anwandter for her upcoming album, Venegas said, “He has worked with his whole heart, professionalism, emotion and all of that is so beautiful. I’m telling you, finding the right partner, friends, and coworkers in life is key to making beautiful things.”

Chesca and Nio García, “Tu2Ru”

On a new version of her single “Tu2Ru,” The Puerto Rican singer Chesca teams up with Nio García. García is most known for his global smash “AM” remix that reunited “Oasis” collaborators Bad Bunny and J Balvin. García brings a street edge to Chesca’s delightful love song. Backed by disco-pop beats, Chesca and García trade verses about having a magical night on the dance floor. García is also a noted dancer so he moves alongside Chesca with ease in the music video. “Tu2Ru” is now a dreamy duet with García in the mix. About not boxing herself into one genre, Chesca said, “I’m not just a fan of reggaeton, but a fan of music and anything that represents me or speaks to me. I feel like that’s the beauty of being an artist. I think it’s an exciting time to evolve.”

GALE, “Problemas”

GALE is continuing to push Latin music to new places. The Puerto Rican singer-songwriter has penned hits for artists like Christina Aguilera, Anitta, Shakira and Cardi B, but now she’s breaking out as a performer. She released her debut single “Inmadura” in March and now she’s upping the ante with “Problemas.” GALE embraces a punk-pop sound as she sings about repairing a relationship with makeup sex. “I wanted to write a song inspired by being in a physical, toxic relationship where most problems are solved in the bedroom. It’s like a vicious cycle: you know it’s not good for you, but you keep coming back for the high and excitement of it,” GALE told LATINA. “Problema” is a fun and flirty pop banger with an angsty edge.

Mau y Ricky and Carin Leon, “Llorar y Llorar”

Mau y Ricky are teasing their upcoming project “Desgenerados.” The title is a nod in Spanish to how the Venezuelan brothers feel like they can’t be boxed in one genre after tackling various styles in their music. Earlier this year, Mau y Ricky went down the electronica route in “No Puede Ser” with Eladio Carrion. Next up, the duo add a pop-rock twist to banda music with a rising star in the genre, Carin Leon. In “Llorar y Llorar,” Mau y Ricky give their most passionate performances yet as they sing about a relationship that’s come to an end. Leon ups the emotion with his Mexican grit. “Llorar y Llorar” shows that Mau y Ricky can kick it at the carne asada. They’re currently filming the reality show “Los Montaner” with their father Ricardo Montaner, their sister Evaluna and their brother-in-law Camilo.

Sinego and Gazelle, “Alba (Morning Edit)”

Sinego is seamlessly blending his Latino roots into his love for electronic music. The Colombian producer and multi-instrumentalist teamed up with Gazelle for his new single “Alba (Morning Edit).” The song opens with a dreamy Spanish interlude before turning into a rustic house music romp. Throughout the seriously sexy track, Gazelle interchanges the words “morning” with “moaning” like he’s partaking in a daybreak dalliance. The electronic mystique that runs throughout Sinego’s songs remains strong here. “Alba” will be a part of Sinego’s highly-anticipated debut album. The LP will include features from Sofi Tukker, Lucy Vives, Pauza and Yo Soy Matt. He also has a side project titled Sinego B Side. Under that project, he teamed up with Armen Paul for a hypnotic remake of Kim Wilde’s classic “Kids in America.”

The singer-songwriters behind other artists’ hits are getting their moment to shine with the new releases from Colombia’s Feid and Puerto Rico’s Mora. Also on the list: Ally Brooke breaks out with her single “Tequila” and Mexican-American band Yahritza y Su Esencia makes their mark with their debut “Soy El Unico.” Check out the list below.

Ally Brooke, “Tequila”

Ally Brooke is cutting loose. This week, the Mexican-American pop star premiered the music video for “Tequila.” Last August, Brooke signed a joint record deal with AMSI and Duars Entertainment, the home of Puerto Rican singer Rauw Alejandro. As with her previous singles like “Mi Musica” and “Por Ti,” she sings in Spanish and embraces her Latina roots. “Tequila” is definitely the sexiest song she’s released so far. Backed by reggaeton beats with an R&B touch, Brooke sings about turning to tequila to party away the memories of a guy who isn’t doing enough for her. In the music video, she has a shot of tequila to help her live out her pop diva fantasy. She stuns in a bright red gown while performing the song on stage. “I feel like I finally found my own womanhood, my artistry, and who I am,” she has said about her upcoming debut album.

Latto and Mariah Carey, “Big Energy” Remix

Mariah Carey is back! Our favorite pop icon of Venezuelan descent has teamed up with rap star Latto for the “Big Energy” remix. Latto reinvigorated interest in Mariah Carey’s 1995 feel-good anthem “Fantasy” by sampling the ‘90s hit in her 2021 release “Big Energy.” Recently, Latto’s hit broke into the Billboard Hot 100 chart’s top 20. To celebrate this milestone, the artist teamed up with Carey for a fun and flirty remix. Carey once again belts the iconic first verse from “Fantasy” in this 2022 update of “Big Energy.” Latto fiercely adds, “You ain’t going to believe this / Hold up, got Mimi on the remix.” This seamless mash-up is a pop dream come true and has all the makings for a song of the summer.

J Balvin and Ed Sheeran, “Forever My Love”

J Balvin has moved beyond the Residente tiraera drama with a new 2-track EP with British singer Ed Sheeran, “Forever My Love.” The collaboration was born when the Colombian superstar met Sheeran at a gym in New York City. “We had a coffee and spoke about life and there was a dope vibe,” Balvin said in a statement. “We bonded over simple things [while] creating a genuine friendship. We even spoke about what it’s like to be a dad.” In the sensual “Sigue,” Sheeran tackles the reggaeton genre with Balvin. “He wanted to bring me into his world and I wanted to bring him into mine,” Sheeran added. “It was a proper challenge learning Spanish for this and I had so much fun doing it.” Their best track together is “Forever My Love.” The acoustic ballad is a beautiful ode to the loved ones in their lives.

Yahritza y Su Esencia, “Soy El Unico”

Yahritza y Su Esencia have the biggest regional Mexican song in the world right now. The Mexican-American trio includes singer Yahritza Martínez and her brothers Jairo and Armando Martínez. Yahritza, who is 15-years-old, went viral on TikTok this past year with her covers of songs by regional Mexican acts like Calibre 50 and Ivan Cornejo. Her cover of Cornejo’s hit “Está Dañada” caught the attention of Lumbre Music owners Ramón Ruiz and Alex Guerra, who signed the band to their label. Yahritza y Su Esencia live up to the online hype with their debut single “Soy El Unico.” Yahritza possesses a powerful voice beyond her years as she lets an old flame know what they’re missing out on. “No one can treat you like I do / I’m the only one,” she belts in Spanish. There’s no one else who sounds like Yahritza in the regional Mexican music genre right now. This heartbreaking corrido is a beautiful beginning to this band’s journey.

Feid, Alejo & Robi, “Pantysito”

Feid is keeping the hits coming this year. The Colombian singer-songwriter previously dropped the deep house-infused “Nieve” and “Mojando Asientos” with Maluma. Now he has teamed up with rising Puerto Rican singers Alejo and Robi for “Pantysito.” The collaboration was born on TikTok where the song went viral before it was even released. Alejo first posted the chorus to the platform, where it caught the attention of Robi. The duo then uploaded another video where they sang the song together, prompting Feid to get onboard. The trio posted a third preview video soon after that generated more interest in the song. Their sexy ode to fashion label panties lives up to the hype. Alejo and Robi come through with alluring performances that Feid rounds out with his Medellín charm. “The song is about telling a pretty girl to get ready so that we can go out and have a good time partying,” Feid tells LATINA.

Mora, “Microdosis” Album

Mora recently  released his second album “Microdosis.” A frequent Bad Bunny collaborator, the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter co-wrote “La Dificíl” and “Solia” on Bad Bunny’s 2020 album “YHLQMDLG,” and he is performing the duet “Una Vez” on Bad Bunny’s El Último Tour Del Mundo. With “Microdosis,” Mora continues to craft his own style  There’s an electronic edge to the album in alluring songs like “2010” and “Bad Trip.” He also teams up with a few heavy-hitters in the reggaeton scene like Puerto Rican icon Zion in “Tu Amigo” and Panamanian singer Sech in “Tus Lágrimas.” Feid pops up as well in the heart-wrenching “La Inocente,” the dream duo we didn’t know needed. The best duet on the album is “Playa Privada” with Elena Rose. Like Mora, the Venezuelan-American Rose also pens hits for other artists. It’s great to hear these two singer-songwriters get their moment together in this sexy collaboration. This dose of Mora’s music is intoxicating.

Joe Ojeda, Victoria La Mala & Yorch, “Bombear La Sangre”

A former member of Selena y Los Dinos, Joe Ojeda is back with his new single “Bombear La Sangre.” The Tejano legend is most known for playing the keyboard on Selena’s hits like “Como La Flor” and “Baila Esta Cumbia.” He launched his solo career last year with the sexy “Dueña De Tu Cama” featuring Mexican acts Victoria La Mala and Yorch. In “Bombear La Sangre,” Ojeda comes through with a sensual banger in the form of a cumbia that sees him reunite with Victoria La Mala and Yorch. There’s a vintage quality to the song that recalls his Los Dinos work while Victoria and Yorch bring in a fresh energy. Those two artists play off each other and turn up the heat with their steamy verses. Ojeda brings their dance floor romance to life with his colorful and entrancing beats. 

Paulo Londra, “Plan A”

After a few years on the sidelines following a contractual dispute, Paulo Londra is back in the game. In March, the Argentine artist signed a new partnership with Warner Music Latina. “I’m happy for this new phase,” Londra said in a statement. “I waited and went through a lot to be able to do what I love, so ‘I’ve gone through the bad times / Now it’s time for the good times / That’s why I’ve started to enjoy it.'” He referenced the lyrics to his 2017 hit “Luna Llena.” Under Warner Music Latina, Londra released his comeback single “Plan A.”  He embraces a pop-punk sound while singing about the determination that’s driven him to keep going. “I really wanted to do something new for myself and I really like rock and punk,” Londra added. “I visualized a frustrated love, like going back to the courts and not getting put in.” His underdog anthem has proven to be a success with the song reaching No. 2 on Spotify’s Global Chart.

La escena del diseño de interiores y mobiliario en México ha tenido fuertes proponentes femeninos desde principios del siglo veinte. La llegada de inmigrantes que desarrollaron su carrera en México, como la diseñadora de mobiliario cubana Clara Porset en 1938, o la diseñadora textil Cynthia Sargent, de Cambridge, Massachusetts en 1951, fue crucial para el desarrollo de la disciplina. Porset además fue curadora y formadora, comprendiendo desde un principio que como mujer, había que trabajar el doble por la incredulidad que se nos da sólo por serlo. 

Hoy en día, esta característica comienza apenas a transformarse o al menos a escucharse. Se puede decir que el movimiento #MeToo sigue causando reverberaciones sustanciales en la industria del diseño industrial y la arquitectura, ambas históricamente dominadas por hombres.

La primera mujer en graduarse en arquitectura en México fue la veracruzana María Luisa Dehesa en 1937, pero no fue hasta 1960 que Aurora Campos Newman obtuvo por primera vez como mujer el título de Diseñadora Industrial por la Universidad Iberoamericana de la Ciudad de México. 

No obstante, los comportamientos machistas tanto de compañeros y maestros como de colegas en el ámbito, apenas comienzan a hacerse visibles. Durante más de cinco meses, las facultades de Arquitectura y Diseño Industrial de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) se mantuvieron cerradas debido a un paro liderado por estudiantes que derivó de la indiferencia ante más de 300 testimonios de violencia contra mujeres. En una carta dirigida a la rectoría de la UNAM firmada por Mujeres Organizadas de la Facultad de Arquitectura (MOFA) el miércoles 8 de septiembre se lee: “NUNCA MAS TENDRAN LA COMODIDAD DE NUESTRO SILENCIO.” 

Con el objeto de continuar esta discusión, LATINA platicó con Andrea Flores y Lucía Soto, dos diseñadoras industriales que emprendieron como Comité de Proyectos en 2014 después de haber colaborado juntas y fungir como socias en el despacho mexicano de diseño mob. Las dos hablaron acerca de su trayectoria y su perspectiva acerca del crecimiento en el diseño en México. La entrevista ha sido condensada y editada para mayor claridad.

¿Cómo empezó Comité de Proyectos?

Lucía Soto: Andrea y yo nos conocíamos por amigos en común pero nuestra relación profesional, comenzó cuando yo hice mis prácticas profesionales a mob, donde ella trabajaba. Digamos que ahí fue donde germinamos, fue el despacho madre o la nave nodriza. Estuvimos, yo 4 años y Andrea 5, y en 2014 decidimos emprender y empezar nuestro propio proyecto.

Empezamos cada una trabajando desde su casa, sin oficina, sin inversión y sin ahorros. Muy poco a poco con proyectos de muebles e interiorismo. Y en 2016, participamos por primera vez en “Inédito” como parte de Design Week — lo que nos dio más visibilidad. Fue la primera vez que hicimos formalmente una colección con un pretexto puramente poético, estético y conceptual. No eran piezas [para] clientes, si no que eran más ganas de expresar y de experimentar. Ese tipo de trabajos han sido algo que ha marcado mucho la trayectoria de Comité.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de darse a conocer como mujeres en el ámbito del diseño en México?

LS: También tuvimos suerte de ser apoyadas por decision makers que eran, en su mayoría, mujeres. Quien nos buscó desde el principio fue Andy [Andrea] Cesarman, la primera vez que entramos a un Design Week. No sé que hubiera pasado si en Design Week no hubiera una mujer organizando y si quizás no nos hubieran buscado de ser así. Pero yo creo que si hemos sentido esta sensación de camaradería, que también se ha vivido desde la perspectiva de los medios. Nos ha buscado [por ejemplo] Greta Ancila de Glocal o Monica Khemsurov de Sight Unseen. Fueron varias mujeres que nos lanzaron la cuerda como diciendo “vengánse pa’ acá”.

AF: También nos ha apoyado mucho Carmen Cordero de la Galería Mexicana de Diseño. Si te das cuenta hay muchas mujeres subidas y navegando en el barco del diseño en México que es muy diferente a otros lugares.

Y también han colaborado con artesanos mexicanos, ¿no?

Andrea Flores: Sí, nos invitaron a participar en Visión y Tradición, una de las presentaciones que forman parte de Design Week donde tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer y trabajar con artesanos de Puebla en 2018. Visión y Tradición es el evento precursor de Ensamble Artesano que se fundó durante el inicio de la pandemia de Covid-19 en México. 

LS: Andy Cesarman lo transformó en una iniciativa de apoyo a comunidades de artesanos en México, ya no tan experimental sino de ayuda para que los artesanos pudieran vender su obra con la retroalimentación de diseñadores para crear piezas comerciales. Cesarman es un personaje importante en nuestra historia y en la historia del diseño en México hoy en día.

Pero no siempre ha sido así. ¿Cómo fue su formación y cómo han vivido este cambio?

AF: Hay una super diferencia. Cuando yo estudié (grad. 2007) era un mundo más masculino y había muy pocas mujeres en la carrera de Diseño Industrial (D.I.) comparado con cuando Lucía estudió (grad. 2010). De repente hubo un boom de mujeres en esa transición y se empezó a abrir el tema de más mujeres en la escena del diseño en México.

Fue un poco difícil para mí la UAM (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana) y acabé la carrera con un curso trienal en el IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) de Barcelona porque me llamaba más la parte conceptual y estética. A diferencia de Lucía quien tuvo workshops durante toda la carrera en la UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) que es más técnica. Así nos complementamos.

LS: Es importante decir que hay que ser conscientes de nuestros privilegios. Sí estudié en una escuela pública pero mis papás tuvieron los recursos para que yo no tuviera que trabajar durante [mis estudios]. Pero, partiendo de ahí, yo soy la única mujer de mi familia que estudió D.I. Toda mi familia – mi papá, todos mis tíos y un par de primos – han estudiado D.I. en la UNAM. Entonces yo ya ya entro dentro del legado de los Soto en D.I. de la UNAM. Mi tío fue fundador de la carrera y fue director, y mi papá fue profesor durante toda la vida de la UNAM y de la UAM. Mi papá ha sido una figura súper importante en muchos sentidos pero en especial en la parte profesional.

¿Cómo funciona la relación de ustedes con los arquitectos?

​​LS: La realidad es que yo lo he vivido un poco difícil. En una de nuestras colaboraciones conocimos a un despacho de dos hombres y una chava (con quien nunca trabajamos directamente.) Ahí es donde yo más claro he sentido un problema laboral que tiene que ver con género.Uno de los arquitectos, conmigo al menos tenía respeto porque soy su par, soy dueña de mi despacho. Pero ese proyecto lo colaboramos con Fer, una chica que trabajó en Comité, y él la interrumpía cuando hablaba, y pues el mansplaining, ¿no? Hasta que ella llegó a decirnos que no era escuchada y que todo lo que decía no valía. 

Una vez, por meter a alguien más de apoyo en el proyecto incluimos a Pol, un pasante, y el arquitecto directamente me dijo: “Ay, por fin, ¡hasta que traes a alguien con quien se puede trabajar!” Literal, nada más porque era hombre. Aunque Fer, con más experiencia y capacidad, le daba quince vueltas a Pol en ese momento.

Y el arquitecto no se sentía cómodo trabajando con una diseñadora. De por sí también entre arquitectos y diseñadores siempre hay esto de que el arquitecto es “el que sabe,” y el diseñador es “el que juega.”

Y el término mansplaining es relativamente nuevo en nuestro vocabulario.

AF: Claro, y sí sucede. ¡No estás loca!

LS: ¡No está en tu mente! No eres una exagerada cuando sientes que el otro te está callando.

AF: Cuando yo era jefa de taller en mob, por ejemplo, liderar un taller como cualquiera lo haría me costó muchísimo trabajo. Teníamos a un maestro carpintero que tenía una cerradés conmigo como: “¿Por qué viene esta niña a tenerme que decir qué hacer y qué no hacer? Que me lo diga el jefe, tú ¿por qué? Y tú, mujer, menos.” 

Y ahora a una de las colaboradoras que están con nosotras, un carpintero llegó a hacerle comentarios de su cuerpo y obviamente ella se sintió atacada. Como diciendo: “mi cuerpo no tiene nada que ver, yo vengo a trabajar.” Y tuvimos que trabajar con el equipo de carpintería. Obviamente todavía hay mucho trabajo que hacer. Pero, ¡qué bueno que ya son cosas que se pueden hablar! 

Antes, lo que le pasó a esta chica, igual ella ni siquiera hubiera tenido la voz para decir: “me pasó esto y no me gusta.” Se lo hubiera callado pensando que es normal.

LS: Si quiera cuestionarte si te gusta o no te gusta. Hace 10 años que salí de la universidad no se podían hablar. Lo dejabas pasar y lo sufrías en otras formas: en tus relaciones personales, en muchas cosas pero no lo veías, y ahora lo ves. Antes era tan parte de tu vida que igual ni te dabas cuenta si te incomodaba que el maestro de taller te agarrara la mano mientras usabas una herramienta. Quizás para tí era así la cosa en el taller, ¿no?

Hay una gran diferencia con las generaciones de ahora.

LS: La UNAM lleva ahorita muchos meses cerrada por una huelga interna por temas de género e impulsada por las alumnas de la facultad de arquitectura y de industrial. Esta chica, Ale, es estudiante ahorita de la facultad.

Y es la primera vez que abordamos un tema interno en el despacho que tiene que ver con género. Te genera mucha ansiedad porque al verlo te sientes impotente. Pero creo que empezar a hacer cosas chiquitas como lo que hizo Ale de decir, esto no me gusta, es súper aplaudible.

¿Qué proyectos están trabajando ahora?

LS: Estamos cerca de empezar un proyecto de diseño de interiores comercial para un edificio de departamentos con amenidades en Chapultepec. 

En departamentos como uno en la Colonia Nápoles u otro que hizo Andrea que se llamó Londres, aquí en la Juárez, tienes el trato muy cercano con el cliente entonces se convierten un poco en tus amigos y diseñas todo pensando en ellos y su vida. Nos dan mucha libertad creativa y el diseño es integral en acabados, áreas, muebles.

AF: Estamos por entregar una casa en Napa Valley cerca de San Francisco, que ha sido un muy largo proceso entre diseño y logística. Es una clienta que nos conoció por 1stdibs y amueblamos las áreas comunes de la casa. Algunas piezas fueron custommade y otras fueron ajustes a muebles de línea. Colaboramos con Emma Gavaldón quien diseñó los tapetes. Es ahora nuestro proyecto más importante dentro del despacho ya en la parte de producción. 

¿Sus influencias?

AF: Más allá de ser personas, nuestras influencias vienen de diferentes áreas como la cultura mexicana, prehispánica, el arte, el diseño brasileño que nos encanta, y la arquitectura. Tomamos esas influencias y las tratamos de traducir a sensaciones que puedan también tener una función y una forma. Y admiramos a muchísima gente como a Esrawe Studio, Mauricio Rocha, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, Tezontle, Patricia Urquiola, Andrés Gutiérrez, Chic by Accident. Seguimos muy de cerca sus carreras porque nos parecen muy interesantes.

LS: Disfruto mucho ver diseño, me encanta. Y creo que eso va permeando mucho en la estética cuando uno diseña. Pero en general yo encuentro inspiración en sensaciones y en la vida diaria. En conceptos, filosofías y en cosas que no tienen que ver directamente con el diseño. Para mi muchas veces la introspección y preguntarme dónde estamos y a dónde vamos, es lo que me motiva para diseñar. Efectivamente la estética de las culturas prehispánicas a mi me es muy llamativa y atractiva. Me gusta mucho su manera de concebir, trabajar y representar el mundo. Estéticamente, Sabine Marcelis, Nendo, Estudio Persona, Vidivixi, Frida Escobedo y Clara Porset, son influencias importantes

Lejos de querer emular a la Ciudad de México, la cultura tapatía ha formado a sus propios grandes maestros y movimientos artísticos sin la necesidad de ir a buscar la fama fuera de Guadalajara. Durante el siglo XX, una comunidad de diseño muy unida estableció la reputación de la capital Jalisciense como un destino nacional e internacional para artistas y diseñadores.

Desde finales de los años 40, el modernismo ganó fuerza con la fundación de la Escuela de Arquitectura en 1948 por Ignacio Díaz Morales, donde inmigrantes europeos como la fotógrafa alemana Marianne Gast y su esposo Mathias Goeritz impartieron clases con el método de enseñanza propio de la Bauhaus, el vorkurs, un curso preliminar enfocado en “learning by doing.” Esta preparación de artistas y creadores fue crucial y mantuvo el ímpetu durante de las siguientes décadas, aunque figuras al frente de la arquitectura modernista jalisciense, como Pedro Castellanos Lambley y Julio de la Peña Lomelín, habían ya precedido.

Dentro de la escena del arte, la institución de colectivos como lo fue el Corpus Callosum liderado por Guillermo Santamarina en 1990 dieron pie a la búsqueda de un sentido comunitario y de camaradería dentro de Guadalajara. Cuando artistas de la Ciudad de México comenzaban a exhibir en París, los Jaliscienses estaban bien en casa, continuando su práctica y perfeccionando su técnica. En cambio, a ferias de arte contemporáneo en Guadalajara como Expoarte en los 90s, asistían grandes galerías de Nueva York quien a su vez iban en busca de nuevos talentos.

Hoy en día, Guadalajara vibra igualmente con una escena de creadores que sigue su propio ritmo y su propio género ya sea en el arte textil, la escultura, la cerámica, la joyería o el diseño industrial. Esto fue palpable durante la segunda edición de Salón Cosa, un “encuentro de objetos contemporáneos” conformado por trece creadores viviendo y trabajando en Guadalajara que tuvo su inauguración en Guadalajara del 27 al 31 de octubre de 2021. 

“Descubrimos un territorio liberado, destapado, invertido, donde los límites disciplinarios e identitarios se doblan y desdoblan: un territorio de excepción,” describen los saloneros Mario Ballesteros y Daniela Elbahara. “De tradiciones hondas pero reimaginadas, reapropiadas, reinventadas. La perla, pero negra, la perla más rara.”

Después del éxito del primer Salón, que tuvo lugar en mayo en el antiguo taller de maquetas de la Casa Estudio Luis Barragán en la Ciudad de México, el segundo Salón Cosa GDL tuvo sede en el noveno piso del Hotel Bellwort antes Edificio Rosales, diseñado por de la Peña Lomelín en 1967.

Entre los creadores está Aldo Álvarez Tostado, quien por segunda ocasión presentó Escena de Potrero, una obra ecuestre que alude al push and pull del machismo y el queerness, sobre todo en torno a la vida y obra del arquitecto Barragán, creador del espacio en que se exhibió esta silla de montar y cinturones de piel minuciosamente grabados con frases sacadas de la dating app Grindr. En una especie de provocación, Álvarez Tostado regresa el espíritu de Barragán a su mucho más conservador lugar de origen.

Siguiendo estas líneas provocativas estuvo presente la obra de Renata Petersen, quien trabaja con cerámica pintada a mano en la que pinta el deseo femenino tipo comic strip y que en esta ocasión presenta This Dick Ain’t Free, un texto en vidrio fundido.

Ballesteros y Elbahara proponen un nuevo formato de exposición de arte que sea incluyente, accessible y abierto al diálogo y la convivencia entre creadores y curiosos. Artículos utilitarios que bien pueden ser arte o diseño coleccionable como lo són las lámparas trípodes de color de Marcelo Suro o los espejos de mano y pared de Alejandro García-Contreras, son ejemplos que van desde lo minimal a lo peculiar y exéntrico.

Mientras algunas como las diseñadoras textiles Julia y Renata Franco de pronto experimentan en nuevas escalas y proporciones – un vestido llamado Mosquito Net Dress impreso en digital con pigmentos naturales se elevaba en el centro del salón – otrxs como Ricardo Luévanos, reflejaron su arte por primera vez en un objeto utilitario. Su lámpara colgante It Felt Like Crashing Into the Sun, impresa en 3D y pintada a mano, es una continuación de su preocupación por la anatomía humana y animal.

Por otro lado, Antonio Zaragoza y Kenia Filippini de Liberal Youth Ministry quienes probablemente sean los diseñadores más importantes en la escena del streetwear de lujo a nivel mundial, diseñaron una backpack impresa en 3D y pintada a mano con 13,000 Swarovskis aplicados a mano. Mientras que las bancas tapizadas de lana diseño de Peca Studio y las vasijas Biznaga de Chamula Hecho a Mano así como su armario, Tritón – colaborando con Pablo Pajarito y Antonio Medrano – fueron otra muestra de la expresión que se logra trabajando en colectivo en Guadalajara. Y que no se estará quieta anytime soon.

La tercera edición ya está en camino y está programada durante Art Week del 9 al 13 febrero de 2022 en la CDMX.
